Stedman, Charles Manly

Charles Manly Stedman (1841-1930), son of Euphrania and Nathan Stedman, a merchant, was born in Pittsboro, NC. He was educated at the Pittsboro Academy and the Donaldson Academy before entering the University in 1857. A member of the Philanthropic Society, he graduated with first honors in 1861. Stedman joined the Confederate army as a private and rose to the rank of regimental major. After the war he taught school in Chatham County, NC, and read law. In 1866 he married Catherine de Rosset Wright and began a law practice in Wilmington, NC. Later he moved his practice to Asheville, NC, and then to Greensboro, NC. Stedman was elected NC lieutenant governor in 1884 and served in the US House of Representatives from 1910 until his death (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 5:431).
